Community Work

The opportunity to participate in a project that benefits local people is a hugely rewarding part of the holiday which gives you a unique connection to your holiday destination.

“Although the entire visit was a non-stop list of highlights, I found the favela painting probably the most rewarding part of the trip. In helping to paint an elderly woman’s house, I shared genuine moments of friendship, and was not just a visitor looking in.”

The project: Make Favela Art

In order for the lives of people living in favelas (Brazilian shantytowns) to improve, the perception of their neighbourhoods must improve. We are working together with local non-profit organizations to make this happen by participating in projects that help improve life in the favelas. One of these projects is to paint an entire hillside favela so that it becomes a huge colourful image visible from prominent places in the city including the Sugar Loaf and the Cristo, that will be seen by hundreds of thousands of people every day.

The first stage is taking place in Morro de Prazeres, a favela onthe hoillside above Santa Teresa. It has the support of children, youngsters and adults that live in the community who join in the painting too!

Make Favela Art -Partnerships

This project works in partnership and support with the following institutions: Sociedade de Amigos do Morro dos Prazeres (SAMP – Society of Friends of Morro dos Prazeres); Projeto Jovens pela Paz (Project Youngsters for Peace); Núcleo de Desenvolvimento Comunitário do Morro dos Prazeres (Community Development Nucleous of Morro dos Prazeres); Rede de Desenvolvimento Humano (REDEH – Human development Network); Centro de Apoio a Moradores das Favelas de Santa Teresa (CAMFAST – Support Center for Inhabitants of favelas from Santa Teresa).
